Ep 128. Marc Lanthier of Boulangerie Bakery on keeping it fresh since 1932

www.bettybread.ca

It’s a privilege for me, as president of Lanthier Bakery, to represent the third generation of our family owned bakery, operating since 1932.

Recently we have made great strides in making our products available to a much wider client base. We are now serving most of Ontario and Quebec.

We have been very attentive to rising food costs, providing our customers with additional value based products. We now provide a much wider range of product size and assortment at different price points. We proudly have added a line of locally grown, milled and baked products, for specific customers.

We will now take greater advantage of our extensive distribution network, and flexible production facilities to work closely with strategic partners, to have better coverage and more diverse product offerings.

What has not changed is that all our products are delivered fresh, never frozen. We continue to produce using the sponge a dough method exclusively, a technique which gives our bread its rich aroma. We continue to be committed to producing healthy, nutricious and tasty products.

From our Family to Yours.

Ep 126. Seema Pabari, President of Tiffinday on easy meals and ready-to-eat curries

www.tiffinday.com

Tiffinday is a boutique food business specializing in plant-based South Asian cuisine. All our products are cooked by human-hand; we source our ingredients, as much as possible, and especially during the growing season from Ontario farmers. When the season ends, we are fortunate to live in a city that has a centrally located food terminal where we can obtain good quality ingredients to keep producing our food, close to home, all year round.

We offer a retail line of ready-to-eat curries, our prepared meals are sold at farmers markets and through a popular litter-less tiffin lunch delivery service, and our hand-made appetisers are available as catered items for your special event.

Our story started in 2010; inspired by the Mumbai dabawallas, we wanted to investigate the possibility of reducing lunchtime packaging waste by creating a “litter-less” lunch delivery service in Toronto. We developed a simple menu, prepared the food fresh each morning at Udupi Palace (the restaurant we work out of), packaged the items in reusable stainless steel tiffins and started delivering them to offices in downtown Toronto. Within a few months, this lunch delivery service became really popular and we continue it even today.

Ep 125. Tony Kenny of Berg Water on ice cold water made from real icebergs

www.bergwater.ca

Established in 1985 and based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, 2001 Investments Ltd. is a successful manufacturing company. In 2005 it formed a new division called Berg Water, a luxury brand of bottled water.

At Berg, we consider Newfoundland one of Canada’s best kept secrets. The ruggedness of the weather is compensated by a wild beauty like no other. The remoteness of the island has made Newfoundland one of the most pristine environments on earth, untouched and unspoiled.

One of the magnificent natural resources accessible to Newfoundlanders are icebergs. They have been around for thousands of years and are an intrinsic part of Newfoundland’s way of life and culture. For most Newfoundlanders icebergs are as common as snowstorms. We appreciate the captivation that these icebergs can have on those that are not lucky enough to have them on their backyard and we feel the responsibility to bring a piece of them to the rest of the world. We want to do it by offering some of the best water produced in Canada, pure iceberg water.

The natural beauty of Newfoundland and its distinctiveness inspired us to create a product as unique and special as this place. We worked with local artists on the design and production of a package that was able to represent nature and purity with an added touch of the coldness of the North. The combination of a unique design for a unique water brought Berg to life and from the moment of its conception it has attracted attention from all over the world. Berg has been displayed in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and New Zealand, receiving flattering praise wherever we go.

Such a unique product has been designed for the selected high end market. Berg is the perfect companion in an exclusive setting. It is a product that differentiates itself from the rest of the waters not only from its elegant and distinguished packaging but also from its content. As a bonus, it is a nice piece of conversation.

At Berg, we are passionate about our product and pride ourselves on our commitment to quality. Our vision is to make Berg a Canadian top export. From our world, to yours.

Ep 124. Jay Prabakaran of Smucker Foods on what is new in gluten free

www.smuckerfoodservice.ca

The history of Smucker’s® begins with the legend of Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman. Early in the 19th century Chapman wandered the Ohio countryside sowing the seeds of apple trees. It was from the fruit of these trees that our Company founder Jerome Monroe Smucker first pressed cider at a mill he opened in Orrville, Ohio, in 1897

Later, J.M. Smucker began making apple butter, which he sold from the back of a horse-drawn wagon. Each crock bore a hand-signed seal as his personal guarantee of quality. His signature on each jar of Smucker’s product is a tradition that we continue today as a sign of our Company’s continuing guarantee to quality.

Today, The J.M. Smucker Company is a leading marketing and manufacturer of fruit spreads, retail packaged coffee, peanut butter, shortnening and oils, ice cream toppings, sweetened condensed milk and natural food products in North America sold under iconic brands including Smucker’s, Folgers®, Jif®, and Crisco®, among others.

In 1988, the Company began offering Smucker’s products in Canada, and today the brand is a market leader in jams, jellies, fruit spreads and ice cream toppings. The Company’s family of brands in Canada has grown to include Folgers coffee, Crisco shortening and oils, Robin Hood® flour and baking mixes, Five Roses® flour, Bick’s® pickles and condiments, Red River® cereals and Double Fruit®spreads. Ep 121. Phil Small of Buncha Farmers on 4 million sales in 5 years

www.bunchafarmers.com

We started our company in the summer of 2005 with a group of farmers and local artisans. We were all from the Greater Toronto Region, Durham Region and Region of York in Central Ontario. Our first store opened on one of our members Farms in Stouffville. Unfortunately we could not all agree on the direction of the company and some of us parted ways for other endeavours.

The remaining few shareholders opened a new location in Queensville, on another farm with a country store. There we started to develop organic and natural products for Wholesale and distribution. Our customers came to love our products and so our Wholesale business began to grow. As a result of the success of our Wholesale business we shut down the retail operation to focus on distributing our products across Canada and the U.S.
